Frequently Asked Questions

  •  At a small independent agency like ours, you are not a number or a statistic, you are a part of the McCoy Insurance family.  Mr. McCoy started this business selling insurance at his kitchen table and today we still operate out of the same home with the same values.  We take it upon ourselves personally, to protect your needs, like if you were part of the family.

  • There are two main types of insurance agencies that can provide you coverage.  An independent agency, like McCoy, or a captive agency.  An independent agency has many different markets/companies that they work with.  If you have a change in risk that your current company will not insure, we can move you to a company that will.  For example, say you add a woodstove to your home and your current insurance company cancels your policy because they do not insure woodstoves.  We could move you to a company that does allow woodstoves, keeping your home protected.  A captive agency can only sell one company’s insurance in their office.  If your home, vehicles or business do not fit the requirements of that company, a captive agency would not be able to provide you with any alternative solutions for coverage.

  • Even if you do not understand insurance very well, we do! Picking the policy that is best for you is a two way street.  The more information you can share about your insurance goals and needs, the more tailored we can make your policy.  And you can sleep easier knowing we have your best interest in mind.  At the end of the day an insurance company can only cover risks they know about, so don't be afraid to share with your agent any questions or concerns you may have.

  • The purpose of insurance is to collect a small amount of premium from each individual and then spread it out when there is damage to members property. The dream is nothing bad happens and we never have to use insurance.  But that is not always the case.  In recent years the storm actively affecting Ohio has dramatically increased causing more funds to be paid out for damages than ever before.  This offset our ratio of premium collected to premium paid out for claims.  Companies have to stay profitable in order to pay out your claims.  We also have companies in our office that have been dramatically affected by the hurricanes in the south.  Even though the hurricane did not impact us locally, the companies were still paying out massive amounts in damages, making the loss ratio inverted. Premiums have been on the rise for the last few years due to the increase in storms as well as inflation.  We are all hopeful that the market will level out here shortly.
